COMMISSION FOR THE AC HOTEL MARRIOTT GREENVILLE

This body of work is a visual narrative about the process of reporting, producing, and disseminating the news. The images collectively tell the story of the news – from reporting to printing to reading.

Influenced by the location of this hotel which is built on the site of former Greenville News building, I studied printing processes and conducted extensive visual research to locate vintage photos to use as source material. At times, I manipulated the scenarios by combining images or altering the physical and emotional relationships among the figures. More frequently, I stayed true to the source photograph in order depict the process with integrity, as well as to honor the figures laboring in anonymity.

These preserved moments from the lives of strangers have always captivated me. By appropriating their images and creating new narratives, these people and this grand tradition will hopefully not be forgotten.

Paintings in the series are not available for purchase.
